Description
Vitamin B3 (niacin) – a B vitamin for more energy when tired – in glass bottles!
Vitamin B3, also called niacin, is a water-soluble vitamin from the B group that is involved in numerous processes in the body. For example, it reduces tiredness and contributes to normal energy metabolism.
Niacin contains the substances nicotinamide and nicotinic acid, which can be converted into each other by the body. As components of enzymes, these two substances are involved in more than 200 metabolic processes. Unimedica’s vitamin B3 capsules use nicotinamide, which is slowly absorbed by the body and is therefore “flush free”.
Who needs vitamin B3?
Vitamin B3 is produced in small amounts by the body itself. It is also present in almost all plant and animal foods, but only in small amounts. It is insensitive to heat and light. Heating makes the niacin bound in food more available. However, it dissolves in water. Therefore, vegetables should only be steamed or the cooking water should be reused in order to benefit from the nutrient.
Only liver, sardines and peanuts contain a lot of niacin. This makes it particularly difficult for people who eat a purely plant-based diet, are allergic to fish or nuts or don’t like offal to get enough of this important nutrient. Therefore, taking additional vitamin B3 (niacin) as a dietary supplement can be useful.
What does the body need vitamin B3 for?
Niacin is involved in numerous metabolic processes in the body. It is essential for the normal production of energy from food and reduces fatigue. Vitamin B3 also contributes to the normal functioning of the psyche and nervous system. Vitamin B3 (niacin) is also important for maintaining normal skin and mucous membranes.
Which foods contain vitamin B3?
Vitamin B3 is found in both plant and animal foods. Liver, peanuts and sardines are particularly rich. Niacin is generally found in beef, chicken and lamb, as well as in fish such as tuna and salmon, and also in eggs.
Plant foods mainly contain vitamin B3 in yeast, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and almonds, pulses, brown rice and wheat bran.
What does “flush free” mean?
Sensitive people often react with a ‘flush’ after taking high doses of niacin – a reddening of the face and arms or a feeling of heat. These symptoms do not indicate an intolerance and disappear quickly. They are caused by the vasodilating properties of niacin.
Unimedica’s niacin is flush free. The nicotinamide in Unimedica’s vitamin B3 capsules is released slowly. This means that people who are sensitive to niacin do not experience the flush that is often perceived as unpleasant.
